Learning to Belly Dance with Props

It's likely that soon after starting your belly dance classes, you'll start going along to fairs and concerts and seeing other dancers using veils, Isis Wings, swords and canes. It's understandable that you want to try out these new "toys" - but please don't be tempted! I see too many belly dancers resorting to props long before they're ready.

It's hard enough for an experienced belly dancer to control two things at once - her body plus a wayward veil or heavy sword - so it's no wonder that a novice dancer will "drop the ball" on one or the other. And because the prop is in front of your eyes, the prop is likely to win. You may not notice your technique is falling to bits while you twirl that sword, but your audience will!

So please be patient, and don't be swayed by teachers who try to get you using props before you feel ready. Sad to say, there are some belly dance instructors who push their students into learning props at the expense of technique - but your dancing will suffer in the end.

When you do start learning to dance with props, there will quickly come a point where you need to buy your own instead of using the school's equipment.

Before you start buying props, make sure you understand what you're looking for. Isis Wings come in many sizes - professional ones are huge, but if you dance in a troupe, you need them smaller so you can all fit on the stage! Veils and zills also come in different sizes

You may find second-hand props on eBay, but I've had some disappointments that way - frayed Isis wings and water-stained veils. If you're considering buying second-hand, study the photographs very carefully. If you can't get a good view from all angles, don't risk it.

New items on eBay are a much safer bet. Check the seller's feedback rating - it can't be faked. Make sure you search for all items available to your location, not just items on your local site - you can miss out on a lot of bargains otherwise.

If you're not sure how to search properly on eBay, use an eBay partner site which specializes in belly dance costumes and props.
