Is life really about attitude?
By Marisa Wright
I'm a Pollyanna. My husband of 18 months is amazed I've survived for over 50 years. How have I managed not to get taken advantage of, ripped off, disillusioned? Just lucky, I guess - but then, that's my attitude speaking! If I really thought about it, I probably HAVE been taken advantage of, or ripped off, at various times in my life. But each time I've picked myself up, written it off and carried on. So looking back, it's true to say my whole experience of life is determined by my attitude. I'm a natural optimist, so the nasty things people have done are the last thing I remember - which means those negative experiences don't colour my reactions today, nor my expectations for the future. Compare that with someone who has been battered around by life more than I have, and has become cynical as a result. Faced with a crisis or a problem, that person is more likely to worry about the worst possible outcome, whereas I'll hope for the best. The person who fears the worst is more likely to focus on preparing for that worst possible outcome, at the expense of trying to make things better. Because I'm hoping for the best, I'm more likely to make efforts to ensure the best is what happens. Of course, that could mean I'm sadly unprepared if the worst does befall! So, attitude not only determines how you experience life, it also determines your actions, and therefore can affect the course of your life. Our attitude is inborn in us, and it's not easy for someone who is naturally "glass half empty" to change their natural bent, but it can be done. And it's worth it! |

I tried for a while to grow a hard skin and "toughen up" as you are supposed to in the business world! Now I just act myself and damme what anyone tinks!
Life in business is all about being at least 3 steps ahead of the rest of the market...
