Belly Dance Costumes - Make your Own?

Belly dancing is the Next Big Thing in women's exercise, and no wonder. It's gentle, beneficial for the female physique, great fun and easy to learn. It's also a great excuse for dressing up and feeling feminine - but buy a costume from your local boutique in the US, Europe or Australasia, and you can find yourself spending a fortune!

One option is to shop online. I have a belly dance store on my own website which allows you to buy direct from Egypt, Turkey and India where the prices are much cheaper. However if you're just starting out, you can really save money by doing-it-yourself, even if your sewing skills are basic.

You'd be surprised how many ordinary garments can become costumes. Add some bling to an ordinary midriff top by edging it with fringing or sequins (you can buy sequin trim ready made - the stretchy kind is best). Another good trick is to cover an old bra with stretchy velvet - it only has to be tacked on! Cover the bra straps with the same material, or use the sequin trim.

Look out for cheap jewellery in the sales - you can break it up and use the stones to decorate bras or belts.

The modern belly dancing skirt is a figure-hugging tube of lycra material and needs some sewing skills to make properly. However the floaty chiffon skirt is still common and more practical - and flattering! - for amateur dancers. You can create a "skirt" with a hip scarf and one or two veils: wrap the veil(s) around you like a skirt, and tie the hip scarf tightly around your hips to keep them in place (I find the easiest way is to put the scarf on first, then pull the veil up through it). Try to arrange the excess veil into two "plumes", one on each hip.

"Faking" costumes can be fun, so give it a try!
